Welcome to the Alliance for Heart Failure’s latest update of 2026. Please read this email carefully as there are opportunities for you to get involved in what is shaping up to be a busy second half of the year. 

The new modern service framework and NHS England meeting 

In March, the Alliance met with the modern service framework team to discuss the recommendations from our report on primary care. We are pleased to see that the new framework recognises the need to explore new case finding opportununties for heart failure, including using the existing NHS Health Check and wider NT-proBNP testing in the community. 

We have now convened a working group to discuss the opportunities and challenges presented by the new framework moving forwards. An initial meeting was held at the start of June. If you would like to be involved in these discussions moving forward, please get in touch with ahf@3nine.co.uk.

Follow up to the primary care report

Following the publication of our report into heart failure in primary care, a parliamentary question was tabled by Baroness Finlay of Llandaff asking the department about planning and resourcing in primary care. The response to this question can be found here.

Report into heart failure variation across England

The Alliance has completed analysis of ICB level data from 2021 to 2025 that covers prevalence, mortality, readmissions, late diagnosis and access to specialist care for heart failure patients across England. 

This has been drafted into a report that aims to identify which areas of the NHS have the highest burden of heart failure, ahead of a potential campaign that aims to drive improvements in areas of the NHS that have the greatest need. The report will shortly be circulated to the committee for feedback and development of recommendations. 

Welcoming Dr Christopher Primus to the Committee 

We are delighted to welcome Dr Christopher Primus, consultant cardiologist at St Barts Hospital who co-led the successful rapid titration pathway. This was featured as a case study in the new modern service framework for cardiovascular disease. We now look forward to working closely with Dr Primus to encourage the uptake of this service across the NHS.
